FUEL CELL INFORMATION

A Purdue University engineer has developed a method that uses an aluminum alloy to extract hydrogen from water for running fuel cells for internal combustion engines. The technique could be used to replace gasoline, though not quite cost-competitive yet. The method makes it unnecessary to store or transport hydrogen - two major challenges in creating a hydrogen economy, said Jerry Woodall, a distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering at Purdue who invented the process. "The hydrogen is generated on demand, so you only produce as much as you need when you need it," said Woodall, who presented research findings detailing how the system works during a recent energy symposium at Purdue.

CHEVY'S EQUINOX IS ON THE ROAD !

Chevy has launched a test fleet of hydrogen-powered Equinox Fuel Cell SUVs. This fleet hit the streets of New York City, Washington, D.C., and Southern California.

"Project Driveway" is the first large-scale market test of fuel cell vehicles with real drivers in the real world. Why? Because hydrogen fuel cells use zero gasoline and produce zero emissions other than water vapor. They're a sustainable technology for a better environment. And they ultimately reduce our dependence on petroleum. Equinox Fuel Cell is an electric vehicle powered by the GM fourth-generation fuel cell system, our most advanced fuel cell propulsion system to date. The electric motor traction system will provide the vehicle with instantaneous torque, smooth acceleration, and quiet performance.

The Equinox Fuel Cell will go nearly 150 miles per fill-up,(2) and reach a top speed of 100 mph. Green Car Journal has given the Chevy Equinox Fuel Cell its Green Car Vision Award ® .(3) The Equinox Fuel Cell won the award over several nominees, including the Honda FCX Clarity and Toyota Prius Plug-In.

Musings:

  • It was August 27th in1859 that Edwin Drake struck oil at 69 feet below the surface near Titusville, Pa.  This was the world's first successful oil well.  At that time it was an inexpensive source of power and quickly replaced the whale oil in lamps. We've come along way to the present price for gasoline.  I hope the fuel cell that scientist Jerry Woodall has developed will be marketed very soon.  Hydrogen power from a formula of Aluminum and Gallium is up against the odds.
